Misc Turkey Notes:
_______Skin the head like a duck.
_______Cut the tail like a pheasant. After skinned, cut tail off. (To cut, raise primary and secondary in front. Raise some butt feathers, and cut from
backside around to front. ) Scrape flesh.
_______Bondo the tail. Fan out tail. Start at bottom right and left edges, shingling next feathers on top of last to center.) Secondary feathers are opposite.
If feather is broken, take it out and spread fan to cover. Spread fan. Put borax on meat and let dry as long as possible. Place fan on waxed paper.
Put bondo on end of feathers to secure fan place- ment. Secure wire in bondo, if fan will be mounted to bird. For flying bird, wire will be straight.
For strutting bird, wire will be bend at right angle.
_______Painting turkey heads.
_______1. Turkey blue. Spray lightly on both sides and back of neck and cheeks.
_______2. Yellow red. Paint wattles red, up bottom of neck, steep angle to hit high spots on sides. Paint eye ring red and then very lightly spray around eye.
If too red, spray with turkey blue. Paint snood red and crease on top of head.
_______3. Sailfish blue. Dust eye and down edge of wattle on both sides and between ridges.
_______4. Go back to turkey blue.
_______5. Off white. Cap white with definite edge on both sides of crease and fade out down nose. Can spray white lightly under eye and in creases down back.
_______6. Payne’s gray.
